My husband had a secret family three towns away

TIFU by discovering my husband had a second family living three towns over for six years. My name is Rachel and I am thirty four years old. I thought my marriage was ordinary and maybe a little boring but safe. Mark and I had been together for nine years, married for seven. We had two kids, a mortgage and matching coffee mugs that said his and hers. Every Thursday Mark told me he had a late shift at the warehouse. Every Thursday I believed him because why would I not. Last month our daughter got sick at school and I needed Mark to pick her up since I was stuck in a meeting. I called his work number because his phone went straight to voicemail. The receptionist told me Mark had not worked there in over a year. My stomach dropped but I told myself there was a simple explanation. Maybe he changed jobs and forgot to mention it. Maybe he was embarrassed about something. I decided to follow him the next Thursday instead of confronting him directly. I told my sister to watch the kids and I sat in my car outside our house waiting. Mark left at six in the evening dressed in his usual gray jacket. I followed his car for twenty five minutes until he pulled into a driveway in a quiet neighborhood I had never seen before. A woman opened the front door and hugged him like he belonged there. Two children ran out behind her calling him daddy. I sat frozen in my car across the street for almost an hour just watching lights turn on in different rooms of that house. I saw him through the kitchen window helping a little girl with what looked like homework. I saw the woman hand him a plate of food and kiss his cheek. I felt like I was watching a movie of someone elses life except it was mine. I drove home that night and did not sleep at all. The next morning I hired a private investigator instead of confronting Mark right away because I needed proof that would hold up legally. Three weeks later the investigator gave me a folder full of photographs, bank statements and a marriage certificate. Mark had married this other woman named Teresa two years after marrying me. He had been living a double life, splitting his week between two households, two sets of children and two women who both believed they were his only wife. The financial records showed he had been draining our joint savings account to support the other household for years. I confronted him in our kitchen with the folder laid out on the table. He turned pale and tried to explain that he loved us both and could not choose. I asked him how long he had planned to keep this up and he admitted he thought he could manage it forever. I filed for divorce the following week and contacted a lawyer who specialized in cases like this. During the legal process I learned something that shocked me even more than the affair itself. Teresa did not know about me either, which meant we were both victims of the same lie. I reached out to her through my lawyer because I believed she deserved to know the truth before anything else happened. She broke down crying on the phone and told me she had suspected something was wrong but never imagined this level of betrayal. We ended up supporting each other through the divorce proceedings since we were technically in the same situation. Mark lost both families in the end because neither of us could ever trust him again. My children were devastated when they learned they had siblings they never knew existed. We agreed to let the kids meet eventually once everyone had time to process everything that had happened. It has been four months since that Thursday night in my car and I am slowly rebuilding my life with my children. Teresa and I still talk sometimes and it feels strange but comforting to have someone who truly understands this unique kind of pain. I keep asking myself how I missed six years of signs and whether I was simply naive or if he was just that good at lying. Looking back there were small clues I dismissed as nothing, odd phone calls, unexplained absences and sudden secretive behavior around his phone. I wonder now how many other people are living similar double lives without anyone noticing until it is too late.
