AITA for going through my fiance phone and finding out my wedding does not exist to half his family. I am Maya, I am thirty one, and I was six weeks from my wedding when my whole world flipped upside down. My fiance Derek and I had been together for four years. Everything seemed perfect. We picked the venue together. We tasted cake together. His mother even helped me pick my dress. I thought I knew this man completely. Then last Tuesday his phone buzzed nonstop during dinner and he left it on the table when he went to shower. I am not usually a snoop but the notifications kept stacking up from someone named Rachel with a heart emoji next to her name. I told myself I would just check once and put it back. I opened the messages and my stomach dropped to the floor. Rachel was not some random contact. Rachel was his ex fiancee from three years before we even met. They had never actually broken the engagement officially, only separated, because her family and his family were business partners and canceling it completely would have caused some financial mess between the families. I kept scrolling and found out he had been seeing her secretly for months, meeting her for lunch, calling her late at night. But that was not even the worst part. The messages revealed that half of his family, his parents included, still considered Rachel the one he would eventually marry for real, and they thought our wedding was some kind of phase he needed to get out of his system. His own mother wrote to Rachel saying do not worry sweetheart, this wedding will not actually happen, just wait it out. I read that line probably ten times trying to understand it. My hands were shaking. When Derek came out of the shower I held up the phone and asked him to explain. He went pale, then he got defensive, saying I had no right to go through his phone, like that was somehow the real crime here. I pushed him to answer the real question and he finally admitted everything. He said his parents never approved of me because I did not come from the same social circle as Rachel family, and he had been too scared to tell me the truth because he actually did love me and did not know how to choose. He said he figured he would just marry me anyway and deal with his family later. I asked him if he was still sleeping with Rachel and he hesitated just long enough for me to get my answer without him even saying a word. I grabbed my coat and left that night and stayed at my sister place. The next morning my phone exploded with messages from his mother, his sister, even an aunt I had met only once, all begging me to reconsider because apparently they thought I was overreacting over a little miscommunication. Reading those messages made me angrier than finding out about Rachel in the first place. They had all known. Every single one of them had sat across from me at family dinners, smiled at me, called me their future daughter, while planning for this wedding to collapse behind my back. I canceled the venue myself. I called the caterer, the florist, the photographer, and told them the wedding was off. Derek showed up at my sister door three days later crying, saying Rachel meant nothing and it was only ever about pleasing his parents, begging me to give him one more chance. He said he would cut Rachel off completely and even move to another city away from his family if that is what it took to prove himself. of me, the stupid loyal part, almost believed him. But then I thought about his mother words, saying this wedding will not actually happen, and I realized even if I forgave him, I would spend my whole marriage wondering who else was quietly waiting in the wings for him to come back. My sister thinks I should block his number and never look back. My best friend thinks maybe people deserve second chances if they are truly honest afterward. I keep replaying four years of my life, wondering what was real and what was just me being the backup option nobody bothered to tell about. Now I am sitting here with a wedding dress hanging in my closet that I cannot bring myself to return yet, and a phone full of messages from a family that was never really mine to begin with. Was I wrong to end things so fast without giving him a real chance to prove his loyalty, or did I make the only choice that made sense.
